About the Department

The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at North Carolina State University is supported by a $30 million grant award from the Bezos Earth Fund. The Center comprises a dynamic, collaborative team of researchers, educators, practitioners, trainees, and staff led by Professor Rohan Sirwaiker, Co-Director & Chief Scientific Officer, and William Aimutis, Co-Director & Chief Operating Officer. Together with academic and industry partners, the Center will advance research, workforce development, and outreach related to the biomanufacturing of diverse types of sustainable proteins while serving as a global knowledge and networking hub.

Essential Job Duties

 This is an internal posting for current NC State permanent and temporary employees, and candidates with RIF priority.

The Program Specialist performs a wide variety of complex administrative functions with specialized program support for the Bezos Center at North Carolina State University.

The Program Specialist ensures unit compliance with University rules, policies, and procedures as well as deadlines set by internal and external entities including the University and the College of Engineering. The position is the administrative liaison of the unit with other campus units and external clients.

Working with the Finance Manager, the Program Specialist will be responsible for managing the administrative, purchasing, travel and account management support activities for staff, students, and faculty for the Center. This position is responsible for disseminating information and responding to inquiries on the process and policies in an accurate, courteous, and timely manner, and providing exceptional service and support, and helping to resolve challenges as they arise.

Recurring and significant duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Compiling and regularly updating business and technical information related to the unit for internal and external use;
  • Documenting and distributing meeting minutes and other important business memos;
  • Planning, publicizing, coordinating, and evaluating Center meetings, special events and public relations activities;
  • Communicating on behalf of the Center, Center leadership, and laboratories to both internal and external clients/offices via email, telephone, oral communication and other media;
  • Initiating and maintaining analytics related to Center activities;
  • Compiling and analyzing data for a variety of reports, grants, contracts and programs;
  • Write and edit various proposals, reports, publications, speeches, and articles;
  • Reviewing and continuously improving unit business practices, and;
  • Managing membership activities and sponsored project accounts.

These duties require the Program Specialist to multitask efficiently and effectively, work well with students, staff, faculty, and administration, external clients and others, and work independently. Effective communications both orally and in writing are important skills to possess as this position will spend the majority of their time working with students, PI’s, and a variety of companies.

Other responsibilities may include:
  • First point of contact for center personnel. Serve as Building liaison which includes notifying residents of ongoing building updates, scheduling and maintaining conference rooms, assigning keys and providing general office support.
  • Process request for travelers (consists of employees and non-employees) by securing the appropriate travel authorization and funding approvals; arrange logistics and finalize payments. Prepare and initiate travel reimbursement(s).

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or similar software)
  • Proficient with tools in Google Workspace and Zoom Workplace
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Familiarity with event planning and coordination
  • Experience in program support, administrative functions, or a similar role

  • Professional experience developing and managing a program/project plan.
