We are searching for someone who shares the same passion and mission to join our dynamic team as the Costume Designer with the College of Arts and Letters.

Job Description: The Costume Designer has a vital role within the College of Arts & Letters, supporting multiple departments including Film, Television, and Theatre, Musical Theatre, Opera, and Shakespeare. This position oversees the designing, fitting, altering, and constructing of theatrical costumes and related accessories in conjunction with the costume shop supervisor and student workers. Reporting to the Production Manager, the Costume Designer’s top priorities will be:

Costume Design
  • Designs and oversees fitting, altering and constructing of the theatrical costumes and accessories for all productions.
  • Work closely with production directors and producers to ideate and define wardrobe requirements, conducting research on time periods, character profiles, materials and translation styles.
  • Prepare initial sketches, costume research and wardrobe concepts for presentation.
  • Present final costume designs, costume plots and samples for feedback; Implement modifications to the wardrobe for final approval; Design or approve hairstyles and the selection of wigs, hairpieces, mustaches, beards, and special makeups; Coordinate with the Costume Shop Supervisor on the design, rental and construction of garments.
  • Participate in wardrobe fittings and production dress rehearsals; Perform fittings, adjustments and final touches on set.
  • Build costumes (i.e. stitch, cut, drape, sew) as needed in support of the Costume Shop Manager

Project Collaboration and Budget
  • Consult the college production calendar and note all due dates; Coordinate schedule of multiple productions needing costumes.
  • Meet with the director and other production team members to determine the concept for the show within which all designers will work; Coordinate regularly with the scenic and lighting designers to make sure that the production design is a cohesive whole; Attend all design and production meetings and work closely with the stage manager.
  • Manage the project timelines, fitting schedules and individual production costume budgets.

Student Mentoring and Oversight
  • Provide an enriching experience for students where they could earn credit by working closely on costume design.
  • Provide students with training and educational opportunities as it relates to costume design.

Please note: This is a five-year, limited-term position. Contingent on funding, the position may be extended.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in costume design, fashion design or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of practical work experience as a costume designer with a strong portfolio of previous work.

Skills:
  • Strong research and interpretation skills.
  • Good knowledge of design principles, techniques and translation styles.
  • Detailed knowledge of materials and textiles.
  • Ability to design and sew patterns for a variety of garments.
  • Ability and willingness to mentor and teach student workers.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills are required.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Other: The scope of the job may require working evenings and/or weekends, particularly prior to openings of theatre production presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with an MFA in design, as well as those with the skills and expertise to lead one course per year for students in costume design or construction. Preference will also be given to those who have previously served as Costume Designer for an academic or professional institution.
