Crime Analyst

Job Description

CRIME ANALYST, MIT Police, to assume a civilian position responsible for collecting criminal activity data, analyzing crime patterns/trends, identifying potential suspects, disseminating information in an accurate and useful way, and collecting and classifying crimes under the Clery Act.  Responsibilities include researching and analyzing campus crime and disorder trends; collecting and classifying crimes, including National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)/UCR reports and Clery Act offenses; analyzing reports for classification accuracy and ensuring crime statistics meet state and federal compliance; analyzing and providing reports/maps/graphs; sharing criminal intelligence data/activity with local police departments; compiling crime analysis reports to identify and resolve crime patters/trends; collecting and maintaining data and policy statements for the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report submitted in compliance with the Clery Act; providing guidance on and assisting with drafting and sending warnings in compliance with the Clery Act; maintaining daily crime log; maintaining clean QED/CAD data and working with supervisory staff to improve the quality of reports; training new hires in the QED/CAD system; maintaining accurate documentation; managing the department’s social media presence and maintaining its website; preparing media for external consumption; networking with outside law enforcement agencies; and other projects/duties as requested.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  high school diploma or its equivalent; two years’ crime analysis or related experience; understanding of the principles of crime and data analysis; ability to work with limited direction and collaboratively with others; and experience with data management (Excel, Access) and mapping software.  PREFERRED:  bachelor’s degree in criminology, statistics, geographic information systems, public administration, or related field; computer aid dispatch/record management system (CAD/RMS) experience; two years’ experience working in Clery Act compliance.  Job #24124-6
