About the Department

The mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is to enhance animal and human health and well-being through veterinarians, education, and advanced training and provide leadership in veterinary care and outreach through interdisciplinary partnerships. The Teaching Animal Unit (TAU) is a dynamic teaching institution for veterinary students in all four years of the veterinary curriculum that includes experiences with swine, poultry, sheep, goats, horses, and beef/dairy cattle. The TAU aims to provide realistic opportunities for veterinary students to learn the relationship between husbandry, production management, economics, and veterinary medicine. This live animal farming enterprise strives to function as compatible with a financially viable agricultural enterprise by emphasizing current best management practices for an environmentally enriched, animal welfare-friendly operation. This student exposure is accomplished annually by providing live animal educational training for seven senior 2-week clinical rotations, six 1-week selective courses, and over 150 teaching laboratories.

Essential Job Duties

The Small Ruminant Specialist will:
  1. Independently Manage the Small Ruminant Unit:
    • Oversee all aspects of health and facilities management.
    • Ensure adherence to and development of EH&S and employee safety programs.
    • Protect and promote the health and welfare of the animals within the unit.
  2. Collaborate on Curriculum Development:
    • Work with faculty and staff to create and implement courses for veterinary students.
    • Train other TAU technicians on the operations and functions of the small ruminant unit.
  3. Support Cross-Functional Operations:
    • Acquire cross-training to support the operations and teaching mandates of other TAU species units.
These duties aim to ensure the effective and safe management of the small ruminant unit while contributing to the education and training of veterinary students and staff.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of Small Ruminant health and management
  • Good knowledge of same in other large and food animal species
  • Ability to safely operate farm equipment- (tractors and manure spreader)
  • Ability to lift 50-70 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations, hay bales consecutively during hay season
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and to physically work with and move large farm animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties.
  • Prefer knowledge and experience of small ruminant management.
  • Prefer knowledge and experience of other large animal species.

Required License or Certification

Valid NC Drivers’ license.
