The UAA Department of Journalism and Public Communications in the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking applicants for its adjunct instructor pool. Our students' stories and Alaska's news starts here. Students learn by doing at the UAA Department of Journalism and Public Communications. They learn and practice the skills of multimedia journalism and strategic communications — skills that are required in almost every field — media, government, business, health and science. Our students get jobs and make meaningful change at the local, state and national level. Applicants for this adjunct pool must be available to work within Alaska during the length of the assignment.

Adjunct instructors in Journalism and Public Communications provide a key link between students and specialized fields, technical skills, and career paths to be found within the Journalism and Public Communications industries.

Adjunct instructors are hired on a semester-by-semester appointment. Qualified applicants for this position will be placed into a hiring pool from which instructors will be hired as needed. Acceptance into the hiring pool does not constitute an offer of an appointment, nor does having worked one semester guarantee that a position will be available the following semester; hiring decisions are made on a semester-by-semester basis according to the needs of that semester's schedule.

Candidates will be evaluated on suitability of their academic preparation, past teaching experience, expertise in their field, and potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students. Adjunct faculty with semester assignments are subject to evaluation for teaching effectiveness.

Candidates must be available to work within Alaska during the length of any assignment.

To thrive in this role adjunct faculty need a passion for sharing their knowledge and skills with students and a desire to help guide students as they pursue their goals. Successful candidates will possess interpersonal skills to engage effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, administration, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree in Journalism and Public Communications or closely related field. Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment.

A PhD in Journalism and Public Communications or closely related field is preferred.

Experience teaching college-level courses in Journalism and Public Communications or closely related field is preferred.

Exceptions may be made for individuals whose experience and accomplishments compensate for the lack of the required education. Such exceptions are reviewed and approved by the College of Arts and Sciences Dean.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage. This is a part-time, adjunct represented temporary position. New hires will be place on the adjunct salary schedule as outlined in the UNAD CBA, based on education and experience.

Applicants should be prepared to attach the following documents as part of their application:

1) Cover Letter

2) Comprehensive Curriculum Vita

  • To be eligible for this position, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction. Applicants who now or may in the future require visa sponsorship to work in the United States are not eligible.

This is an at-will, union represented adjunct position, and may be canceled based upon the needs of the university.
