Position: HR Director

Salary: $125,000 - $160,000
The Human Resources (HR) Director will lead and manage the HR function for our dynamic nonprofit organization with over 400 employees and an HR staff of four. This role is critical in fostering a positive workplace culture, ensuring compliance with labor laws, and implementing HR strategies that align with the organization’s mission and goals. Reporting to the CEO, the HR Director will be a strategic partner to the executive leadership team, driving initiatives that support employee engagement, development, and retention.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy:
- Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and executive team on all HR-related matters.
- Foster a positive organizational culture that promotes employee engagement and satisfaction, through regular employee communications initiatives and measured by regular employee surveys.
- Oversee the development and execution of HR policies and procedures, including the development of HR infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the organization.
Talent Acquisition and Management:
- Lead the recruitment process to attract, hire, and retain top talent, including direct hires, temporary employees, and independent contractors.
- Develop and implement onboarding programs to ensure new hires are integrated successfully.
- Oversee performance management processes, including setting performance standards, conducting the evaluation process for the organization, and implementing improvement plans.
- Design and implement employee development programs, including training and career development initiatives for executives, managers and staff.
Employee Relations:
- Manage employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, terminations, exit interviews, internal investigations, and litigation support.
- Promote a positive work environment through effective communication and employee engagement initiatives.
- Maintain the employee handbook and code of conduct so that it accurately reflects expectations of and resources for employees.
- Develop and send organization correspondence ranging from routine process reminders to special communications addressing agency changes.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Oversee the administration of compensation, payroll and benefits, including the management of leaves of absence and workers compensation programs.
- Conduct regular market analysis to ensure competitive compensation and benefits offerings, including when needed the development of position descriptions and job analysis.
- Restructure and manage the annual performance review and salary adjustment process.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws and regulations.
- Manage, support and track company training, certification and licensure requirements to ensure compliance with the law and contractual commitments.
- Prepare and maintain reports related to HR activities and metrics, including support audits by external government agencies.
- Conduct regular audits of HR practices to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
Organizational Development:
- Lead initiatives to improve organizational effectiveness and employee satisfaction.
- Implement change management strategies to support organizational growth and transformation.
- Develop succession planning programs to ensure leadership continuity.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development or related field and SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification highly desirable.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 5 years in a HR leadership role managing a team of other HR professionals.
- In-depth knowledge of labor law and HR best practices, with specific expertise in California.
- Proven ability to develop and implement HR strategies that align with organizational goals providing effective coaching to managers and employees for successful outcomes.
- Experience in the nonprofit sector with proven change management skills, is strongly preferred.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving and data driven decision-making capabilities.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- This is an onsite position based in San Diego county. Candidates must be able to relocate themselves if currently living outside of the area.
