Basic Function

Under the general supervision of an administrator or manager, plans, coordinates, and implements comprehensive sports medicine programs for the care, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of physical injuries.

Representative Duties

1. Evaluates all initial athletic injuries; recommends, responds to and performs appropriate medical care to student athletes; communicates diagnoses, medical treatment, and rehabilitation information to student athletes and their parents, as legally required. E
2. Develops and implements injury management protocols and emergency action plans; renders first aid, immediate injury evaluation, initiates Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and activates Emergency Medical Services (EMS) when necessary, at practices, hosted events, and required off-campus events. E
3. Initiates, updates, and maintains athletic injury documentation, injury surveillance, follow-up treatment, and rehabilitation under a physician’s direction; manages treatment of chronic athletic injuries; determines and certifies ability of students and athletes to participate in the athletic program. E
4. Develops and implements therapeutic exercise programs. E
5. Recommends and implements appropriate preventative measures to avoid athletic injuries, illnesses, and conditions. E
6. Organizes and conducts pre-participation exams; conducts various screening procedures, including but not limited to physical exams and assessments; develops and implements conditioning programs to minimize risk of injury and illness. E
7. Performs and applies preventative taping, wrapping, bracing, and padding of injured areas to the student athlete. E
8. Arranges for transportation and ensures the loading and set-up of medical equipment to event sites is completed and accessible E
9. Provides reports to coaches and other District personnel on injuries and status of student athletes under treatment. E
10. Serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, and athletes regarding athletic injuries and medical insurance claims. E
11. Assists with the budgeting, ordering, and inventorying of athletic training equipment and supplies; notifies appropriate personnel when inventory is low or equipment is in need of calibration or repair. E
12. Arranges for physician and/or ambulance coverage at games when required. E
13. Maintains all forms, reports, and medical records related to athletic injuries, rehabilitation, and medical clearance. E
14. Maintains working areas in a clean and sanitary condition; wipes down treatment tables, taping tables, and counters, sweeps floors, cleans the whirlpool, and other equipment E
15. Attends and participates in seminars, conferences, and other meetings in order maintain status and certification; keeps up to date on legislation and trends affecting the area(s) of assignment. E
16. Promotes an environment of belonging as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, anti-racism, and accessibility. E
17. Provides quality customer service when interacting with the public, vendors, students, and College staff, including individuals from minoritized groups. E
18. Supports and abides by federal, state, local policies, Board policies, and administrative procedures. E
19. Participates on committees, task forces, and special assignments, including, but not limited to Screening and Selection Committees and mandated trainings as required. E
20. Prepares and delivers oral presentations related to assigned areas as required. E
21. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations including but not limited to greets and directs students and/or visitors, answers phone calls, responds to callers, and directs incoming phone calls; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion or requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance standard office equipment. E
22. May oversee and provide work direction to student aides, interns from the athletic training education program(s) and other student volunteers; may provide work direction to student workers and/or short-term, temporary staff.
23. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

• California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
• Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the area of assignment.
• Record keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing systems methods and techniques.
• English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
• Techniques for providing a high level of medical service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, students, and District staff, including individuals of various ages, disabilities, various socio-economic and ethnic groups.
• Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
• Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

• Establish and maintain filing, record keeping, and tracking systems.
• Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet critical time deadlines.
• Operate various office machines (including personal computers and copiers) and the use of software, such as, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and District Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems.
• Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in athletic training, kinesiology, physical education, health, pre—medicine, biology, or related discipline; AND
  • Three (3) years of experience working in an athletic training environment.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
• Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid National Athletic Trainers Association Certification (BOC-ATC).
• Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid Professional Rescuer CPR/AED certification.
• May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must possess mobility to work in an athletic training facility and in the field and use standard office and medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various District and event sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
While performing the duties of this job, employees must possess mobility to work in an athletic training facility and in the field; use standard office, medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment including a computer; operate a motor vehicle to visit various District and athletic or special event sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
Employees in this class must possess the mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to emergency situations, provide injury and illness care, and use all medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment; finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, as well as, to set up and manipulate modalities, tape, and apply splints and to operate the equipment mentioned above.
Incumbents in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to provide medical care; push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class.
