Essential Job Duties
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative seek a tenure-track Associate or Full Professor (distinguished professor) with specific expertise in genome editing with an emphasis on molecular approaches. This position will develop a multi-faceted research program focused on genome editing, which has emerged as one of the most exciting, and potentially transformational, technologies in the biological sciences in recent decades. While it is widely accepted that genome editing represents a clear opportunity to significantly enhance food security, nutrition and environmental health, it has only been partially exploited in this regard up until this point in time.
This individual will be an established, world-renowned academic in the field of genome editing and whose primary responsibilities will be in the areas of research and training while establishing a broad set of partnerships and collaborations, both within and beyond the university. The successful candidate will be expected to set bold, innovative research goals as well as establish and lead a world-class gene editing center aimed at advancing and applying state-of-the-art gene editing technologies. We seek a scientist who is prominent and well-recognized in the area of genome editing, especially plant genome editing, with demonstrated management and integrative leadership skills, who is a collaborative leader with a track record of exceptional scientific results. The position is critical to College departmental research, leadership, and training missions; the formal appointment is research (50%), administration (45%), and teaching (5%).
The Distinguished Professor will also serve as Executive Director of a world-leading research and application center for plant and microbial genome editing that will focus on the development and deployment of biotechnology tools for the improvement of a broad range of crops for the benefit of academia, industry and civil society. The Genome Editing Center for Sustainable Agriculture (GEC), which is in the process of being established as an NC State University core research facility, will become a world-recognized, core center of expertise in this field. The GEC will build upon the significant existing research expertise in both genome editing, genome sciences, plant transformation and plant breeding that already exists at NC State, ensuring that the institution remains at the cutting edge of both development and application of the technology. The center will advance the tools, technologies and processes for genome editing; act as a resource to the entire academic community and provide services to industry partners while establishing intellectual property through the development of new tools, plants and traits that enhance food and energy security and improve nutrition as well as human, animal, and environmental health.
The Distinguished Professor, in their role as executive director of the GEC, will be supported by a fully funded senior research group that will assist in research activities and provide services to academic and industry partners. The GEC, and the distinguished professor’s research program, will be located within the state-of-the-art NC State Plant Sciences Building located on Centennial Campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Major responsibilities include:
- Develop and lead the GEC’s strategic and cutting-edge research program’s vision.
- Develop the GEC’s national and international profile by building a dynamic community of world-class researchers, including faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and students.
- Ensure financial health and sustainability of the GEC.
- Establish and maintain broad partnerships and collaborations with academia and industry. Act as a key liaison to ensure effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee the development of intellectual property through the creation of new tools, plant varieties/microbial strains, and traits.
- Direct and manage the integration of research activities, resource allocation, and facility management to ensure success of the overall operation and effectiveness of the GEC.
- Contribute to the educational and training activities of NCSU.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in genomic sciences, or a related discipline.
- Previous research experience in genome editing with an emphasis on plant genome editing.
Other Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to publish research in respected peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a productive research program/center.
- Experience securing extramural support for research activities.
- Experience developing and securing IP.
