The Student Ambassador and Mentorship Program (SAMP) is an equity-driven, peer-mentoring initiative that supports women, non-binary, and transgender students who identify with at least one of the following categories: 1. Person of color or Hispanic/Latinx, 2. Student with a disability, 3. First-generation college student, 4. LGBTQIA+, 5. Pell-Grant eligible. SAMP’s core values are leadership, professional development, and community. SAMP aims to provide ongoing leadership and professional development training to prepare and support peer-mentors in their role as campus leaders. Through peer-mentoring, programming, and individualized support from the Success Coach, SAMP strives to support academically at-risk students to increase their GPA and obtain their degree at Holyoke Community College.
 

Under the general supervision of the Director of SAMP, the Success Coach is responsible for helping ambassadors (mentors) develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to their success as peer-mentors to their cohorts of scholars (mentees). The Success Coach assists the ambassadors in managing their caseload of students by providing appropriate outreach, intervention, and referrals for scholars when needed. The Success Coach is responsible for monitoring the academic success of all ambassadors and scholars and conducting consistent, proactive outreach to unresponsive students through various channels, including phone calls, emails, tabling, text messages, and letters home.

 

 

  • Promotes persistence and completion of SAMP by maintaining a caseload of participants.
  • Maintains appropriate records and data of student caseload using innovative platforms such as EAB Navigate, MentorCollective, Google Suite.
  • Monitors progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication, responding to students’ questions, concerns and needs.
  • Conducts holistic coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their job performance.
  • Assists the SAMP leadership staff in the development and implementation of programs. Plans events, trainings, and workshops in accordance with the program's core values.
  • Performs outreach to campus partners to present information and materials for student recruitment: oversee student application and department interest form, conduct interviews.
  • Fosters community and belonging by leading the peer mentorship component of SAMP and monitor monthly mentor reports.
  • Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding success in their peer mentoring role.
  • Collaborates with campus partners as necessary.
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Monitors Ambassadors’ internship experiences; coordinate internship placement, review learning plans, conduct assessments throughout the term.
  • Provides constant, active outreach to unresponsive students in the form of phone calls, emails, tabling, text messaging, and USPS mail.

 

 

REQUIRED:


  • Bachelor's degree or higher in counseling, human development, psychology, education, social work or related discipline.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in professional coaching, academic advising, counseling, or related field, preferably serving underrepresented student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance and effectively deliver programs to diverse campus audiences, showcasing a strong understanding of and commitment to self-awareness, cultural competency, and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience, personal or professional, in navigating systems of higher education from a bicultural understanding in any of the following communities: Hispanic/Latinx community, Disability community, BIPOC community, LGBTQIA2+ community, First-generation college student community, communities in poverty.
  • Problem-solving and professional communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in student development strategies and high impact practices. Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a 21st century comprehensive Community College.
  • Ability to practice and conditional positive regard/decorum while providing critical feedback in a constructive manner that allows for student learning.
  • Highly organized with the ability to effectively manage event planning and student caseloads concurrently.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the creation and development of new and successful projects and programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body; and generative thinking skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain clear and professional boundaries with students of all ages.

PREFERRED:
  • Knowledge of coaching, teaching, counseling, or mentoring techniques.
  • knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities.
  • knowledge of traditional and online engagement techniques.
  • knowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to the position.
  • Fluent in Spanish (highly preferred).
Skills:
  • Candidates must have a strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple demands and effectively organize and manage time and tasks.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.
  • Understanding that appropriate, professional boundaries with students serve as the building blocks in the foundation of the Success Coach and student relationship.

 

 

Full Time, MCCC Unit position


Salary: 
Grade 4; Salary Range: $63,159 - $75,089/year; Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.

Grant-funded
Hours: 37.5 hrs. /week
