Job Description:

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the assigned Administrator an Assistant Coach provides comprehensive support for the designated sports program, as well as assisting with instruction and leadership. The position includes responsibility for assisting the Head Coach with the recruitment of student athletes, assisting in operations related to the program, as well as supporting the head coach in practices and games, team scheduling, programming, and public relations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

The duties of the Assistant Athletic Coach may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Understand and abide by the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) rules and regulations that govern intercollegiate athletics at the community college level.

Adhere to the Compton College policies and procedures in conformity with the requirements of the 3C2A.

Assist Head Coach and the Dean of Athletics and Student Support Services in resolving cases where the student -athlete violates an applicable regulation.

Assist with the coordination of all aspects of practice and competition within our Athletic Conference.

Assist with the recruitment of high school athletes under the rules and regulations of the 3C2A.

Cooperate with physicians, athletic trainers, and equipment staff to ensure student-athletes receive proper medical care, physical training, and safe equipment.

Report all injuries, misconduct, or other unusual situations to the Head Coach and Dean of Athletics and Student Support.

Ensure appropriate safety measures are observed when conducting team activities.

Advise and assist student athletes in achieving stated academic and athletic goals .

Assist with the coordination of off-season training and conditioning program.

Assist with the coordination of equipment, supplies, meals, transportation, and travel requests.

Assist with the preparation of an annual budget.

Participate in the Physical Education and Athletic Department Program Review process.

Assist with the development and implementation of fundraising plans for the Compton Athletics Department.

Attend appropriate division and departmental staff meetings.

Work with the athletic staff on the health and well-being of the student athletes.

Promote interest and attendance at athletic events; assist in fund-raising efforts for the program.

Assist in planning and scheduling competitions, tournaments, and events in collaboration with coaches within and outside of the conference and in concert with academic schedules, District policy, and 3C2A/Conference regulations; distribute schedules to student athletes, department personnel, and campus media personnel; collect and report subject sport statistics.

Establish and maintain safety standards to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities; demonstrate techniques of movement and body mechanics that prevent injuries; provide immediate assistance to injured student-athletes; document injuries and submit record-keeping reports as required.

Create a positive atmosphere for the student athletes; support academic progress, retention, and matriculation of student-athletes through mentoring activities; refer student-athletes to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate; maintain confidential student-athlete information.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of any bachelor's degree and two years of coaching experience, OR any associate degree and six years of coaching experience, Or any HS diploma/GED and eight years of coaching experience.

A First Aid Certificate issued by a recognized First Aid training program must be obtained within the first three months of employment.

A CPR Certificate issued by a recognized CPR training program must be obtained within the first three months of employment.

A valid Driver License.

Sensitivity to and understanding of multi-cultural, diverse environments and college students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

 

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

This position is not eligible for fringe benefits.

This is an hourly assignment, and the position is exempt from overtime.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor work settings, depending on the sport.

Frequent bending, twisting, and reaching.

Days and hours may vary.

Interact with a variety of individuals.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT

Compton College (originally Compton Junior College) is a public community college offering a full complement of transfer and degree courses, as well as career and technical education. Enrolled students may earn an associate degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year university or train for a career.

 

Compton College is part of the Compton Community College District, which encompasses an area of about 29 square miles, making educational services available to nearly 300,000 residents of Compton, Lynwood, Paramount and Willowbrook, as well as portions of Athens, Bellflower, Carson, Downey, Dominguez, Lakewood, Long Beach and South Gate. About 290 full-time and part-time faculty teach more than 40 degree programs and 20 certificate programs.

HISTORY OF COMPTON COLLEGE

The Compton Community College District (CCCD) was established in 1927 as a component of the Compton Union High School District. In 1950, voters approved a bond issue separating the college from the high school district. Construction of the new college campus was completed on the present site. Classes began on the new campus in fall 1956.

 

In August 2006, the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees approved a Memorandum of Understanding to provide educational and related support services to Compton Community College District residents.

 

On June 7, 2017, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) granted initial accreditation status to Compton College. The action established Compton College as an accredited college within the El Camino Community College District.

 

Compton College was officially named the 114th California Community College through unanimous vote by the Board of Governors in July 2017. On August 29, 2018, California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Oakley issued Executive Order 2018-01 declaring Compton College will operate as an independent college under the authority of the Compton Community College District (CCCD) Board of Trustees effective June 7, 2019.
