Contingent on course offerings and student demand, to begin approximately Spring 2025, pending position clearance, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs.  

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Under general supervision, design, deliver, and assess instruction in human anatomy and physiology with reference to course competencies and institutional and program-level student-learning outcomes. 

  • Develop and/or update course content, materials, methods, and teaching and assessment strategies to:

  1. improve student attainment of learning outcomes;

  2. address the learning needs of the college's diverse students;

  3. integrate thinking and writing skills into course content, as appropriate; and

  4. use technology to support instruction.

  • Plan, organize and independently carry out independent instructional and non-instructional assignments.  

  • Perform other teaching-related duties that include, but are not limited to, preparing course syllabi and maintaining office hours for academic advising and conferring with students about coursework (one office hour per week per three-credit class).  Regular workload may include teaching in various formats including on-campus, hybrid, and/or distance education, evening and weekend classes, continuing-education classes, and teaching at off-campus sites. 

  • Non-teaching duties include:

  1. working collegially to provide service to the department and college;

  2. engaging in public service related to one's professional status and/or expertise;

  3. engaging in professional development, and;

  4. engaging in professional or scholarly activities related to one's discipline or teaching.

  5. development of state-of-the-art lecture curriculum, and learning technologies for on-campus and/or online courses

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Master’s degree in Human Anatomy & Physiology OR Master's in Zoology, or any Health or Biological Science with 9 credits graduate coursework in vertebrate anatomy and/or physiology. 

Note: Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated ability to achieve positive outcomes in teaching human anatomy and physiology courses using an approach supportive of college students as substantiated by student and peer assessments.

  2. Demonstrated ability to commit to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door policy for diverse learners.

  3. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with students, faculty, and staff.

  4. Experience integrating critical thinking skills in teaching at the college level.

  5. Demonstrated ability to commit to incorporating the scientific method into the instruction of laboratory courses.

  6. Demonstrated ability to successfully and innovatively use technology to support instruction.

  7. Evidence of effective distance education course presentation and development.

  8. Experience conducting the assessment of student learning and using results to improve course presentation.

  9. Demonstrated ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results.

  10. Demonstrated ability to write clear prose as substantiated by an attached one to two page statement and/or publication.

  11. Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College’s vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai‘i and the world.
