Position Description

DEFINITION:
To provide classroom instruction in a variety of topics and disciplines related to Information Technology to students through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. IT Instructors teach hardware, software, security, networking, and operating systems courses as needed as well as other specialty areas.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


  • Receives general supervision from the department chair.

  • Receives technical direction from the program director.

  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants and work study students.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:


  • Provide classroom, laboratory and online instruction to students.

  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.

  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance, grade, and record individual scores.

  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.

  • Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.

  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to the required teaching area.

  • Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields related to information technology; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.

Other Important Functions:
  • Teach day, evening, and online courses.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:


  • Knowledge of hardware, software, operating systems, networking, and security. May specialize in two or more areas.

  • Artificial Intelligence knowledge a plus.

  • Programming languages including Python, JAVA, and C#, cloud development a plus.

  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures related to the delivery of IT courses.

  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.

  • Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies.

  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.

Ability To:
  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

  • Analyze problems; identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

  • Effectively direct the provisions of the academic area to which assigned in support of the college programs.

  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds

  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:
  • AAS in Information Technology or Computer Science.
  • A degree from an accredited college or university or specialized training at the level required to meet SACS criteria for academic and professional preparation of the assigned area of instruction.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Information Technology Master’s degree or a Master’s degree in related field with additional 18 graduate hours in Information Technology.
  • One year of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher.
License or Certificate:
  • Industry certifications preferred for Information Technology instructors.
