The Program Assistant will assist in planning and conducting county 4-H programs in partnership with other 4-H programming staff and Extension personnel at the Moore County Center. Such programming will include, but not be limited to, school enrichment, club programming, camps, special interest programs, and community outreach events. This staff member will train and recruit critical community volunteers and program leaders to continue program outreach throughout Moore County. This staff member will also act in a Volunteer Coordinator role for the Moore County Center.

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 40-hour per week position. This position is 100% county-funded.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Moore County is a largely rural county with eleven incorporated small towns which include the Village of Pinehurst, a vacation and retirement destination often referred to as the “Home of Golf.” The county covers almost 700 square miles of land area in central North Carolina. It is part of a region known as the “Sandhills” characterized by sandy soils and rolling hills. Moore County’s population is currently estimated to be at 105,030.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Moore County 4-H Program Assistant is an employee of NC Cooperative Extension, NC State University. Under the direct supervision of the Moore County 4-H Agent, and the indirect supervision of the County Extension Director (CED), the 4-H Program Assistant will serve as a positive role model for youth and help to expand the 4-H program in Moore County.

The Program Assistant will assist in the recruitment and enrollment of volunteer adult leaders and/or school-aged youth participants into the 4-H program, deliver, train or teach approved
4-H curriculum to adults and/or youth groups related to STEM education, leadership and life skills, submit required program records and evaluations as requested, promote the 4-H program with the general public and targeted audiences, recruit volunteers from within the community to assist with programming, collaborate with local Cooperative Extension staff and agencies, and assist with securing program resources.

Programs delivered by the 4-H Program Assistant involve implementing programs in community clubs, after-school and school enrichment settings. The 4-H Program Assistant will be expected to assist and attend residential 4-H camp, and various county, district and state 4-H events. The 4-H Program Assistant receives programmatic guidance from the 4-H Agent with overall supervision provided by the CED. The 4-H Program Assistant works with the 4-H Agent, and the CED to meet the needs of the county. Renewal of the position is contingent on the availability of funds.

The 4-H Program Assistant works with participants in group settings and individually (as needed). While performing this role the 4-H Program Assistant will:
  • Travel within the county, district, and state using state, county, or often a personal vehicle. A personal vehicle is required. Travel reimbursement is provided according to state guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the role of NCCE as an educational agency.
  • Facilitate the collection of required data and submit reports to the Extension Reporting system (ERS), the Moore County 4-H Agent and the Moore County CED.
  • Help maintain and guide volunteers, families and youth with 4-H online enrollments.
  • Maintain confidentiality of program information.
  • Coordinate with collaborating agencies to extend program outreach to eligible families.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with agencies and organizations serving 4-H audiences.
  • Attend and participate in required 4-H related meetings and training within the county and outside of the county,a few may include overnight travel.
  • Participates in lifelong learning and professional development by participating in training and other opportunities as designated by the State 4-H office, the County Extension Director, and the District Extension Director.
  • Enhance program visibility by communicating program impacts to local stakeholders and potential participants.
  • Promote educational opportunities beyond 4-H within Cooperative Extension and partnering agencies to program participants.
  • Recruit, train and utilize volunteers to assist in program promotion, planning, and delivery.
  • Meet established programmatic standards for performance and impact.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday 8 - 5 business hours, with occasional flex hours to attend night and/or weekend events to support the Moore County 4-H Programs.

Minimum Experience/Education

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Department Required Skills

Computer literacy including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite products is expected.

Candidates should have excellent time and resource management skills, should be personable, and able to build networking coalitions.

Candidates must have experience in working with youth and adult audiences.

Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, be able to handle multiple tasks, and establish priorities accordingly.

Candidates must recognize the importance of teamwork and fully support the comprehensive county Extension program.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Prefer prior experience working with children and adult volunteers in either a career or substantial volunteer capacity.

Required License or Certification

Valid NC Driver’s License and reliable transportation is required and must be maintained.
