Job Description

UCSD Layoff from Career Appointment: Apply by 8/09/2024 for consideration with preference for rehire. All layoff applicants should contact their Employment Advisor.

DESCRIPTION

The mission of the UCSD Center for Epigenomics is to develop a quantitative and molecular framework to study the function and regulation of the human genome, with the ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of cancer and other human diseases. Epigenomics is at the forefront of Precision Medicine. The epigenome plays a central role in regulating the functional output of the genome during development. Changes in the epigenome that result from exposure to stress, pathogenic conditions and during aging can determine the patterns of gene expression and predispose an individual to diseases. Epigenome research promises to significantly improve our understanding of the factors that drive human development and disease. The UCSD Center for Epigenomics works with researchers on the UCSD campus and beyond to foster the application of epigenomic concepts and technologies to clinical, translational, and basic research.

Under supervision of the Center's Associate Director, the Epigenomics Research Associate will be trained to perform experiments to map cells' epigenomes such as ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, single-cell ATAC-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, and Paired-Tag. The incumbent assists in producing high-quality data for multiple research efforts across campus and as part of international research consortia. The incumbent will also assist in contributing to technology development by helping to automate these workflows on liquid handling robots to maximize throughput and minimize cost per sample. The incumbent will assist in experimental design and be responsible for careful record keeping, operating laboratory equipment, troubleshooting, quality control, and periodically summarizing results for supervisors. Additional duties may include contributing to laboratory management, organization of laboratory reagents, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. We seek a candidate who is enthusiastic about learning cutting-edge genomic techniques and working in a dynamic "start-up" atmosphere similar to what might be found in the biotechnology sector, yet within a vibrant academic research university.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in molecular biology and biological research or related field. Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Ability to perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA preparation/extraction, and gel electrophoresis.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as MS Word and Excel. Experience in a UNIX command environment is a plus, but not required.

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a diverse laboratory environment.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff, research staff, and function as a member of a research team.

  • Enthusiasm for learning new techniques, and working in a fast-paced "startup" atmosphere.

  • Ability to follow step based experimental protocols.

  • Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

  • Experience with general lab maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Ability to gain hands-on experience with epigenomic assays such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, or ATAC-seq.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Hands-on experience with high end laboratory equipment such as robotic platforms, cell sorters, or DNA sequencers.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Occasional evenings and/or weekends may be required.

  • Willingness to work with animals, lentivirus, radioactive material, human tissue and standard hazardous laboratory compounds.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
