POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technician II, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (Part-Time)

DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences & Nursing

PRIMARY LOCATION: New Bedford; other Bristol locations (Taunton, Fall River, Attleboro) as needed.

POSITION STATUS: This is a part time, non-benefitted, AFSCME, 6 hours per week, 30 weeks per year position. Although laboratory support is needed primarily during the day, evening and weekend support may be required occasionally.

SALARY: $27.13 per hour


 

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Certified Occupational Therapy (COTA) Laboratory Assistant for the Occupational Therapy program is a core faculty who holds a minimum of a baccalaureate degree. Job responsibilities include; assist OTA faculty with curriculum development, teaching, student advisement, attendance at department meetings, support the department with lab set up, safety compliance, inventory management, ordering of lab equipment and supplies, as well as performing related work as required.


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the program and course instructors as scheduled with day-to-day activities and services of the OTA lab area including lab set up and management of the lab equipment and supplies.
  • Assists the program and course instructors as requested
  • Ensures the lab space is clean, safe and organized.
  • Promotes safe lab practices.
  • Conducts periodic inventory of lab resources.
  • Participates in and contributes to OTA program curriculum development.
  • Assists primary OTA faculty instructor in the review of student performance of clinical competencies.
  • Supports student learning through teaching of lab curriculum.
  • Demonstrates and supports the use of occupational therapy frames of reference, protocols and techniques as well as occupation based interventions.
  • Assists in the monitoring of student progress; gives feedback; facilitates student participation in learning activities.
  • Assists with the process of assessing student performance on practical, oral and written examinations.
  • Supervises open lab time.
  • Supports students through assisting with student advisement.
  • Maintains credentials as required for the position and profession.
  • Focuses on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 


Job Requirements:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience as an occupational therapist, and (B) must be a graduate of an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy (ACOTE), (C) must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree awarded by a recognized institutional accrediting agency. The baccalaureate degree is not limited to occupational therapy; and (D) licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).


 

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Manual dexterity
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Gather information through observation and by examining records and documents.
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Communicate effectively in oral expression and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Deal tactfully with others.
  • Exercise sound judgment.
  • Work in a team setting.
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English, with a preference for Portuguese or Spanish.
