Associate Faculty (PT) : Corrections Education, English at Monroe Correctional Complex

 


SALARY:
 Five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $6,208.03

LOCATION: Monroe Correctional Complex, Washington

DESCRIPTION:

This recruitment is to accept applications for instructors to teach college-level English courses, including English 101.

This teaching position is located at Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC). MCC consists of several facilities within the complex. The Minimum Security Unit is a 300 bed, adult minimum custody facility; Twin Rivers Unit is an 800 bed medium custody and long-term minimum facility. We also provide educational services to the Special Offender Unit and to the Intensive Management Unit. MCC is located approximately 30 miles north of Seattle, WA. Edmonds College at MCC offers Basic Education for Adults and vocational programming to students, including an AAS-T degree program, High School Credentials, CIS certificate, and CTAP certificates. The Monroe Correctional Complex offers incarcerated individuals with education and work opportunities that will assist them in their transition back to society.

 


The college is especially interested in recruiting applicants with diverse backgrounds to teach our diverse student population.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Master's Degree in English OR a related field
  • Successful experience as a composition instructor or teaching assistant at the college level. Other applicable experiences may be considered.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
  • Successful completion of DOC and Edmonds College required training

 


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:
  • Experience with Canvas or another current Learning Management System as an instructor, teaching assistant or student.
  • Ability to teach effectively in a variety of formats, including hybrid and online.
  • Ability to effectively incorporate a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Ability to effectively incorporate cultural and social diversity within the course content.
  • Ability to teach at a variety of times, including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience working effectively with a culturally diverse student population.
  • Experience working in a correctional environment or an understanding of a prison environment.

 


PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is typically performed in a classroom which requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Instructors typically use a personal computer in the work environment. Additionally, this position will be located inside a Washington State Correctional Facility where the potential for violence exists.
 

COMPENSATION:
Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $6,208.03 at Step A.
 

WORK SCHEDULE:

The work schedule is based on an eleven-week quarterly schedule and could vary each quarter.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • You must document your citizenship or employment authorization within three days of hire.
  • Criminal background check. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Position is subject to a criminal background check by both the Department of Corrections and Edmonds College.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Position is subject to a criminal background check.
  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.
